Thierry Mugler - The Big French Designer
Born in Strasbourg in December 1948, he arrived in Paris aged 20 and created his own label “Cafe de Paris” in 1973, a year before founding Thierry Mugler.
The French designer was known for the powerful-shouldered, cinch-waisted silhouettes that reigned over fashion in the 1980s.
The 1992 launch of his company's first perfume "Angel" in collaboration with Clarins, which acquired a stake in the company before taking control in 1997. This was a runaway success.
He created many stage costumes for Beyoncé and in 2019 designed Kim Kardashian's famous "wet dress" for the Met Gala.
Mugler's designs were worn by stars including David Bowie and Lady Gaga.
A showman at heart, he organized spectacular presentations of his creations pioneering the modern spectacle of the 21st-century fashion show.
