'Coming 2 America' Scores the Biggest Streaming Weekend in the Past Year

Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall‘s newest film is breaking records.

Coming 2 America stole the show on its opening weekend as the most-streamed new movie of the past year. Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall's brainchild and second installment of the Coming to America series follows Prince Azeem as he travels to Queens, New York, to find his long-lost son. In addition to the original stars, the film features the likes of Jermaine Fowler, Wesley Snipes, KiKi Layne, Leslie Jones, and Tracy Morgan

The movie premiered on March 5 on Amazon Prime Video, and according to Screen Engine/ASI, Coming 2 America beat out The SpongeBob Movie: Spong on the Run and Raya and the Last Dragon, which were the two other films that premiered the same weekHowever, this is not where the film's success ends. In addition to trumping these much-anticipated releases, Coming 2 America also outshined the streaming debuts of viral films like Wonder Woman (1984), which premiered on HBO Max in December 2020, and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, which premiered on Amazon in October 2020. 

Coming 2 America's release on a major streaming service has allowed the film to be enjoyed by many. Murphy's return to the screen as Prince Akeem is as endearing and humorous as ever. Watch the trailer for this year's most-streamed film below.
