Harlan Coben's prolific novel-writing career has caught the attention of Netflix, which is determined to adapt many of his works for its streaming audience, with mixed success across various international markets. Their latest adaptation, however, appears to have received significant investment.
The story of "Fool Me Once" revolves around a murder, or rather, multiple murders. The protagonist, Maya (played by Michelle Keegan), witnesses the horrifying murder of her husband Joe (Richard Armitage, who previously starred in the Coben/Netflix collaboration "The Stranger"). This tragic event is just the beginning of a suspenseful narrative.
The plot thickens when Maya, following advice to install a nanny camera, is stunned to see footage of her supposedly deceased husband playing with their daughter. Confusion arises when her sister-in-law questions whether Maya actually saw a body, and a lawyer preparing to read Joe's will reveals that Joe's death certificate has not been issued.
Doubts are cast on the mental stability of Maya, a former military officer, especially when her brother-in-law (married to Maya's sister who was also shot months earlier) expresses his own suspicions. The narrative then delves into the interconnectedness of these murders, with Maya's niece and nephew actively pursuing their mother's killer. Meanwhile, dark aspects of Joe's past emerge, alongside potentially dubious interactions involving the melancholic detective Sami Kierce (Adeel Akhtar) and his family.
"Fool Me Once" is a treasure trove for fans of British murder mysteries. The cast delivers exceptional performances, with Joanna Lumley's portrayal of the disdainful mother-in-law standing out. Although a key plot twist has divided viewers, the show's ability to captivate audiences makes it a binge-worthy experience. Spanning around six hours, this fourth Netflix-Coben thriller set in Britain's luxurious locales is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Furthermore, fans can look forward to more adaptations, as Coben and Netflix have agreed to bring 14 of his novels to the screen.
