Larnaca Biennale 2023: A Journey Through The Heart of "Home"

Nestled in the historic city of Larnaca, against a backdrop of shimmering shores and sun-kissed buildings, the Larnaca Biennale stands tall as Cyprus's grandest art celebration. Since its inception, the Biennale has grown exponentially, both in stature and attendance. With more than 25,000 visitors gracing its last edition, it is not just the biggest art and culture event in Cyprus but also one that is awaited by international art aficionados.

From 11 October to 24 November, the ancient city of Larnaca will transform into an artistic wonderland for the Larnaca Biennale 2023. An impressive tapestry of events - spanning main exhibitions, concerts, theater performances, lectures, and workshops- promises an experience that transcends the traditional boundaries of art and culture.

This year's edition, curated by the illustrious Yev Kravt, revolves around the poignant theme "Home Away from Home." The theme beckons viewers into an intimate exploration of belonging, challenging them to stretch their understanding of 'home' beyond mere physical confines. Delving deep, the Biennale unravels the layers of home as more than just brick and mortar. It presents the idea of home as a fleeting feeling, a cherished memento, a vivid memory anchored in time, a cornerstone of one's identity, or perhaps a quest spanning a lifetime.

In a rapidly globalizing world, where people continually move, adapt, and reshape their identities in response to socio-economic, political, and environmental changes, the 3rd edition of the Larnaca Biennale becomes an avenue to seek answers. What truly constitutes the feeling of being 'at home'? How does one grapple with the void of a lost home? And as we venture into the future, how do our visions of home evolve?

The overwhelming response to the Biennale's Open Call is a testament to the resonance of its theme. With 500 entries and a discerning selection committee of international luminaries, this year promises unparalleled artistic depth. Art historian and museum director Lars Kærulf Møller, art historian and curator Niki Papaspirou, conceptual artist Lia Lapithi, and Bertan Selim of the Prince Claus Fund have together curated an ensemble of 100 artists, each echoing their unique interpretation of 'home'.
