Not Another Princess, Not A Hero: Karl Lagerfeld becomes a Disney+ Series
One of the most productive and creative names in the fashion world, German designer Karl Lagerfeld's unforgettable legacy continues to be honoured after the fourth year of his death. Known for boldly displaying his artistic impulses in his collections, from the brand he launched under his name to the designs he created for many fashion houses such as Fendi, Chanel and Chloe, Lagerfeld undoubtedly comes to life in our minds with his black glasses, white hair in a ponytail and conic black suit. While we eagerly await the Met Gala dedicated to the memory of Lagerfeld this year, we recently learned that Disney's big-screen adaptation of his life is on the way.
Launching later this year and under the name "Kaiser Karl", the Disney+ six-part series will chronicle Karl Lagerfeld's rise in the highly competitive high fashion scene of 1970s Paris. One question that intrigues us the most is who will bring this iconic designer to life; German-Spanish actor Daniel Brühl will portray Lagerfeld. So, we'll see Daniel Brühl recounting the iconic designer's career during his time as creative director of Chanel and Fendi. Suppose we discuss a period full of intrigue and contention in 1970s Paris. In that case, there is no doubt that Lagerfeld's relationship with Jacques de Bascher and his fierce rivalry with Yves Saint Laurent is also worth mentioning. The ongoing shootings of the series are taking place in France, Monaco and Italy, and the victorious French screenwriter, director and dialogue writer Jérôme Salle sits in the director's chair.
While how the storyline will be knit is still a secret, we know that in the series, we will see Lagerfeld's struggle full of disappointments and collapses in his career and epic parties, which we can call an inseparable part of his life. On the other hand, Disney assured Lagerfeld that it would also feature in the series his love affairs and friendships with Marlene Dietrich (played by Sunny Melles) and Paloma Picasso (Jeanne Damas), Loulou de la Falaise (Claire Laffut) and Andy Warhol (Paul Spera) manages to keep our excitement alive. While Kaiser Karl is shooting with over 2,200 extras and 40 different sets, as Disney stated, it is also exciting that 160 of the 3,000 costumes prepared for the series can be designed and produced from scratch.
